A station you can hear may be calling for a new contact, speaking with someone else, or waiting for a digital reply. Knowing which is happening tells you whether to answer, how to respond, and when to leave the frequency clear. Chapter 7 prepared the station. Operating procedures help you use it to exchange information.

We’ll begin with the choice of mode and frequency, then follow a voice contact from the first call to the final identification. CW uses many of the same habits, with short codes to guide the exchange. DX and contests add situations where several stations want to answer at once, while digital modes range from typed conversations to automated message transfers.

These activities offer different ways to enjoy the equipment you have. A brief exchange can be a complete contact; a longer conversation may follow when both operators have time and conditions allow.

The final section applies those skills to emergency communication. Whether you are exchanging names or relaying a request for help, listen carefully, send information clearly, and confirm what was received.
